Top Ten Things You should Know about Health Insurance in Colorado

  1. In Colorado individual or family health insurance is less expensive than group health insurance.
  2. With an individual health insurance policy in Colorado you own it, not your employer.  As long as you continue to pay the premiums, the policy is yours.
  3. Unlike automotive insurance, you can't be singled out for a rate increase, nor can the health insurance company cancel your family health insurance plan based on your claims experience.
  4. Individual health insurance in Colorado is subject to underwriting, meaning that, when you apply for health insurance, if you have health issues you may be subject to "up-rating," possible exclusion of preexisting conditions, or denial.
  5. There are over 400 different individual health insurance policies available in Colorado, from at least eight health insurance companies.
  6. Having a Health Savings Account is a great way to save money on taxes.
  7. Using an agent doesn't cost you any more than not using one.
  8. Colorado law requires that insurance companies provide you with a standard format "Colorado Health Benefit Plan Description Form" that is specific to Colorado, to make comparing plans easier.
  9. Your employer can make non taxable contributions to your individual Health Savings Account.
  10. Insurance companies must provide coverage for a dependent newborn child of the policy holder from the moment of birth.
